Kumi Koda Complete Discography (Original Albums)
Kumi Koda is a Japanese singer, lyricist, actress, and general entertainer with over 10 original albums, 50 singles, and 100 music videos. Although she's been around since 2000, she didn't hit major success until 2005 with the release of her first best album, "BEST ~First Things~". Since then she's carved herself a niche in J-pop history as one of the most successful solo female artists in recent times.

"affection" is Koda's debut album. For bonus tracks it included tracks off her American released English dance singles. Although this album performed better on the charts than the singles that preceded it, it still underperformed to avex's expectations, and rumors abounded that Koda may be dropped from her label if she didn't produce a hit. It's her most RnB heavy album, and reflects the time when Koda was considered a generic teen idol.

Oricon: #8

"grow into one" contains the double hit "real Emotion" and "1000 no Kotoba", the single that Koda needed to keep her career afloat. As a result, this album sold twice as much as her debut and also reached the top 10 in the Oricon charts. Starting from this album she began to drift away from RnB to a more traditional pop sound, and her image became sexier.

"feel my mind" charted higher than both of her previous albums, but sold somewhere in between. Beginning with the single "Crazy 4 U" she began her infamous "ero-kakkoii" image that carried over into the photo book of this album. First press editions contained the track "Cutie Honey" which would be her next single. This album is considered by most of her fans as the end and the strongest of her first era.

It's also her first album to come with an optional second DVD that contained Koda's first original drama, "Cherry Girl" (which is her first time starring in a lead role.) As an extra touch, the track "Milk Tea" is Koda's first effort at composing.

"Kingdom" is Koda's first original album to feature a live concert on one of its DVDs and to feature a promotional video for every track. Otherwise, it sold about half of "Black Cherry" a week before. An explanation for this sudden drop in sales is attributed to the scandal Koda found herself in a week after "Kingdom's" release, in which she insinuated that women who have children over 35 have "rotten amniotic fluid" and incited the anger of many of her existing and potential fans.

"Dejavu" sees the return to falling sales, as it's her first album since "secret" to debut with less than 200,000 sales in its first week. Overall, it barely sold over 200,000 copies. Regardless it still maintained her #1 streak. The DVD with the music videos contains videos for "Megumi no Hito" and "BE MY BABY", two tracks not on this album but from her cover album "ETERNITY ~Love & Songs~".

"UNIVERSE" is both Koda's eighth original album and her fifth best album. Technically it's her fifth best before her eight original, although the title "UNIVERSE" refers to the original album. (The best's title is "BEST ~Third Universe~") The cover set is meant to reflect her second best album "BEST ~Second Session~" (the cover can even be seen on two of these covers). Since it combined both original material and was a "best', the sales of the album didn't plummet as far as her previous two albums.

"JAPONESQUE" is Koda's 10th original album, and the one to mark her tenth anniversary in the entertainment industry. Thus it had a lot of fanfare, with 19 tracks (only two of which were instrumentals), a music video for every full song, and multiple release versions. Regardless, it's thus far had her worse sales since "feel my mind". Television promotion was put on hold for the album as Koda went on maternity leave a month before its release.
